Review: Bill Burr – Paper Tiger (Netflix)

Rob’s Review:

One caveat; if you’ve seen Bill Burr live in the last year or so, you’ve seen half of the material in this special. At least 4 times, he started a story and my wife and I looked at each other and said “oh, yeah, this one…”

No matter. It’s exactly what we’ve come to love and expect from Burr. Similar to Dave Chappelle, Burr has found his niche in being as non-PC as possible, while being more than simply a guy who randomly insults people. Burr’s hilarious takes on Michelle Obama never having a job, sex with robots, male feminists, and why he’s glad Stephen Hawking is dead are laugh-out-loud spot-on.

Similar to Jim Jeffries, now that Burr has a child, he works more fatherhood and marriage material into his act, but doesn’t lose his edge in any way. He explores his own anger issues with both his wife and daughter, and discusses, without filter, being married to a black woman. All-in-all, it’s another hour of one of the few comedians able to push back against all of the sacred cows we’re told we have to avoid. Oddly, it was filmed in London, where they don’t necessarily appreciate jokes about American TV shows like “the Real housewives,” and there were a few spots where we noticed Burr’s timing was off and he seemed slightly distracted. Unless you’re a rabid Burr fan you won’t notice nor care, and even if you do, it will be an hour of your time well spent.
